Primeape

Post by Flirtacious Silver on Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:20 am

Damn you, Ambipom! I know Primeape was never really too popular to begin with, but when those guys at Nintendo decided it would be a good idea to make you, poor ol' Primeape lost all hope of EVER being the coolest monkey on the block. He might have anger issues, but at least he's not too happy for his own good. A little outburst every now and again is very theraputic, actually. Maybe you should try it sometime, no? But ANYWAY- don't worry Primeape, I still think you're the best monkey there is, and to celebrate, I'm making you a set that's designed to make you mad... just the way I like you :)

Primeape @ Razor Claw
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Anger Point
EV's: 252 Atk/252 Spd/6 HP

~ Substitute
~ Fling
~ Brick Break
~ Ice Punch

Fabulously gimmicky, but with potentially massive payoffs. Start with a Sub (OR a Fling if you feel Primeape's up to it). Substitute will give this lunatic somethng to hide behind and bide its time until that beautiful Crit comes along, whereas Fling will send your Razor Claw over to your opponent straight away, boosting their Critical Hit ratio, potentially spelling out game over very quickly if you strike lucky. Once everything's in place, you should (with a ton of luck) have 6+ Attack and one fuming monkey that the opponent's gonna have to deal with... quickly.

Brick Break's in there for screen breaking (should you really need it), although Close Combat could be used for absolute raw power. Ice Punch hits stuff that's up in the air (since Primeape has be doomed to the lower tiers, you don't really need to think about Gyarados and the like).

So there you have it- a set not dependent on skill but rather on luck. More often than not, it'll fail miserably but if that Critical hit strikes, lock your doors, bolt your windows and hide your children. This Primeape's on a rampage...

Ummm, I think you misunderstood Anger Point. You go to +6 if they get a crit, not you. Nice set though :)

Fling won't give your opponent the item. It just chucks it at them, does damage and the item goes away. If only Fling worked like Switcheroo or Trick.

Even if you did get a Razor Claw on the opponent I think Primape has to take the actual crit, not the sub, to get the boost.

I've seen this strategy run in a doubles battle. Cloyster with negative nature, Skill Link and Razor Claw uses Icicle Spear on Primape or Tauros with Anger Point. It gives 5 chances for a really weak crit on your pokemon, then you get a +6 attack boost and proceed to sweep.

Even then though I think Primape would be a little weak to take a full turn of hits before attacking. Tauros pulls it off better.

Not saying Primape isn't an amazing pokemon. Vital Spirit, STAB Close Combat, and good sweeping stats makes him an excellent Scarfer and revenge killer if not outright sweeper.

Anger Point is definatly an interesting ability but in competitive singles I don't see it having any reliable use. Especially with Vital Spirit being a significantly more useful ability.

Sorry to kinda crushed your set... I like the originality and I really wish it could work like you want it to but unfortuatly it's not going to happen. =(

Yeah, I thought Primeape had to take a Crit for the ability to work, Squishy. I should have made that a bit clearer, lol =D

I see what you mean, Nick. Primeape's a little too fragile for this sort of thing, but there was never really any intention of actually using the set- I just thought it'd be cool if it worked, heh. In terms of that item, on second thoughts, a Lansat Berry would be better since that activiates as soon as it hits something. So it's like chucking over a Focus Energy. That doubles combo is awesome, too.

I wasn't too sure if the ability activated behind a Sub or not, actually, so I checked, just out of curiousity. Turns out Anger Point still activates if you've got a Sub up. That's pretty cool.

You're right about Primeape being a great Scarfer, especially with Vital Spirit. That is such a great ability.

Thanks for the comments, guys

Primeape shouldn't have too many problems with Gyarados, really. It gets Encore for DD and T-Punch, and even Thunder or T-Bolt can work if you mix with a Scarf or an Orb.

I ran a Primeape in my old Sunny Day team with Overheat to take care of Skarmory switch ins. It was a OHKO. Rapes unsuspecting SkarmBliss.

Primeape @Life Orb
-Close Combat
-U-Turn
-Thunderbolt
-Taunt/Encore
Vital Spirit, Naive
144 Atk, 112 Sp.Atk, 252 Spd

OHKO's BulkyDos after Stealth Rock damage with T-Bolt. 2HKO's Skarm with or without SR damage. U-Turn and Taunt/Encore for versatility.
